Before tooth removal, the area is numbed, so you may feel some pressure when the tooth is removed, but no pain. Conscious sedation is available if you’re feeling very nervous. At Face Teeth Smile, our dentists are trained to remove teeth in an atraumatic way. That means it’s done expertly and in a well-planned way, without damaging the surrounding bone, which is important if you’re planning on dental implants in the future.
After a tooth extraction at our Chalfont St Peter clinic, we recommend:
No alcohol for at least 24 hours and no smoking for at least 72 hours
No strenuous activity for at least 24 hours
Over-the-counter painkillers to manage any discomfort
No rinsing your mouth for at least 24 hours to allow a clot to form and avoid further bleeding. If there is bleeding, bite down on a clean handkerchief for at least 15 minutes
After 24 hours, rinsing with warm salty water four times a day for a week
Eating soft foods
Brushing your teeth but avoiding the healing wound to begin with, then brushing closer to it each day. Try softening your toothbrush in hot water before brushing.
Recovery from tooth face extraction depends on the complexity of the procedure. After a simple tooth removal, you can carry on with your normal routine on the same day. If it’s more complicated, you may need a few days to recover.

Simple tooth extractions at Face Teeth Smile in Chalfont St Peter usually don’t need stitches, but more surgically invasive extractions do. Our dissolvable stitches disappear on their own in about two to three weeks after the tooth removal procedure. For patients taking medication which causes bleeding, such as warfarin, we always use stiches to prevent bleeding.
It’s important to be aware of and respect the anatomy during tooth extraction. At Face Teeth Smile near Gerrards Cross, we use 3D CBCT X-rays, which show nerves, blood vessels, sinuses and other surrounding structures. This ensures we can remove teeth safely.
Before tooth removal, we’ll discuss your options for replacement and make a plan – that might mean a dental implant, bridge or denture. To preserve bone height and width for a future implant, we can carry out socket preservation by placing bone-graft material after teeth extraction.

This man has changed my life. Ever since I was young, I always hated my teeth. Dentists said that I would need surgery and braces for 2 years. As a teenager, the thought of wearing a brace never appealed to me. As the years went on and my teeth moved further, I decided to get it sorted. I went to various people to get quotes and was amazed at some prices given to me. However, Dr Raj treated a friend and was recommended. I decided to go and visit and get his opinion. The first thing I noticed was that Dr Raj was focused on the outcome. He was a perfectionist. Price came second. I decided to go for the invisalign, whitening and composite package and never looked back. If there were issues, he was there to sort. Dr Raj wasn't happy with one tooth moving millimeters, so decided to get more invisalign retainers made (free of charge unlike competitors).
