Wisdom teeth are an adult’s third set of molars and are positioned at the back of the mouth, with two at the top and two at the bottom. They usually appear (or ‘erupt’) between the ages of 18 and 25, but not everyone has them all.
By your late teens, your jaw is normally fully developed, and many people don’t have room to accommodate four new teeth. That’s why erupting wisdom teeth often become trapped or ‘impacted’.
If they don’t grow straight up in the right position, it’s common for them to push against neighbouring teeth, remain stuck under the gum or only partially emerge from the gum. This can lead to:
•Swollen, tender and bleeding gums
•Infection and gum disease
•Bad breath and an unpleasant taste
•Difficulty maintaining oral hygiene
•Tooth decay
•Damage to surrounding teeth
•Pain and restricted movement in the jaw
•Cysts
As part of your routine dental check-ups at Face Teeth Smile, we take detailed scans and X-rays to make sure we know the status of your wisdom teeth. This lets us formulate a treatment plan before you experience any pain or infection.
If your wisdom teeth have space to erupt and are growing in straight, we’ll advise you on at-home care to keep them healthy and infection-free. Sometimes we recommend contouring the gum around the wisdom teeth using state-of-the-art dental lasers to prevent food getting stuck. For impacted wisdom teeth, extraction is usually the best course of action. Face Teeth Smile dentists are experts in atraumatic extractions – these are fully planned with the help of 3D X-rays and carried out in a way that minimises damage to the surrounding bone. If you’re nervous about having an extraction, we can carry out the treatment under dental sedation. Once the tooth is out, we’ll show you how to care for the socket to ensure a quick and complication-free recovery.
Book Your ConsultationAt Face Teeth Smile, we always try our utmost to save a tooth, but that’s not always possible.
At Face Teeth Smile, we recognise that undergoing dental procedures can make some patients nervous.
Dental pain can be extreme, difficult to manage and a cause of severe stress and anxiety.
When a tooth suffers deep decay, a fracture or trauma, the internal nerve may become infected and lose its blood supply.
If you feel you’d benefit from any of these treatments, book a consultation to discuss the results you could experience, and which approach would be best for you.
