CROSSBITE
A crossbite is a type of misalignment, which means the top and bottom teeth aren’t properly aligned. While most people have a comfortable jaw position that allows for a slight overbite (with the top teeth sitting a little bit in front of the bottom teeth) this isn’t the case with crossbite.
For patients with this condition, some of the upper teeth sit behind, or inside, the lower teeth. A crossbite can affect groups of teeth at both the front and back of the mouth. This bite alignment is similar to an underbite, where all – rather than just some – of the teeth are incorrectly positioned.
Genetics play a role in the development of crossbites, which can be a family trait. They’re also often a result of thumb sucking as a child or the late development of adult teeth. As with all bite issues, crossbites vary in severity.
If you have a crossbite, you may experience a number of issues. The relative positions of the top and bottom teeth can lead to excessive or uneven wear and you might experience chipping where teeth clash. Receding or damaged gums are common in crossbite patients and can lead to painful periodontal disease and potentially even bone loss. If left untreated, a crossbite can contribute to pain in the jaw, neck and head or cause speech difficulties.
