Gap Teeth
Gaps between the teeth can appear anywhere in the mouth – they might be just between the front teeth or generalised through the entire mouth. Gaps can be present from childhood or develop over time, getting worse with age.
As everyone’s jaw shape and size is unique, it’s not unusual for the spacing of the teeth to be imprecise, leading to inconsistent gapping. Sometimes a gap appears between the front teeth because of overgrowth of the piece of tissue that attaches the top lip to the gum. Thumb sucking as a child is also a potential cause.
The size of gaps can vary widely and can cause self-consciousness and discourage people from smiling. There are also practical problems with gaps, especially when they’re found at the back of the mouth. Gaps can create pockets and if food habitually gets caught in them it can lead to bad breath, tender gums and possibly even gum disease.
