EXCESSIVE SWEATING
Excessive sweating – also known as ‘hyperhidrosis’ – is caused by over-active sweat glands. While everyone sweats in order to maintain a normal internal temperature, sufferers of hyperhidrosis are genetically predisposed to sweat even when they don’t feel too hot. The problem may be focussed on specific areas of the body, such as the underarms, feet or hands, or can be experienced all over.
The impact of excessive sweating can be overwhelming. You may habitually sweat through your clothes and experience discomfort and associated odour. It’s common to feel severe self-consciousness and social anxiety, and sufferers often avoid exercise, which can have an impact on physical health. Unfortunately, the stress caused by excessive sweating can make the condition worse, as can hot weather, alcohol consumption and eating spicy foods.
Wearing loose clothing, using high-strength antiperspirants and avoiding triggers such as alcohol can help manage sweating to some degree. To tackle the root cause, however, it’s necessary to ‘switch off’ the sweat glands.
