White spots on the surface of the teeth are a common complaint for both children and adults.
At Face Teeth Smile in Chalfont St Peter, we offer white spot removal. White spots on teeth can appear for several reasons, such as trauma to the tooth, thin or missing enamel (known as hypoplasia) or fluorosis caused by excessive intake of fluoride in childhood. Many wearers of fixed braces experience white spots and they can also be an indicator of decalcification caused by dental decay. Although spots are most noticeable when they appear on the front teeth, they also form at the back.
At our Chalfont St Peter practice, we use ICON® resin infiltrate – a cutting-edge treatment that tackles white spots on teeth. ICON® is ‘micro-invasive’, meaning there’s no need for drilling or anaesthesia. It’s a tooth-coloured resin that infiltrates the microscopic pores in the tooth’s surface.
When you come to us for a consultation, we’ll first assess your teeth to make sure white spot removal is the best course of treatment for you. To remove white spots, we treat the white spot with a mild acidic gel then rub ICON® resin into the area. As the resin absorbs into the tooth, it blends the white spot with the rest of the enamel, effectively causing it to become invisible. Removing white spots not only eliminates a potential cause of self-consciousness, but also preserves healthy tooth structure.
While ICON® alone is an effective way to improve the appearance of mottled teeth, larger and more stubborn white spots may be more successfully treated with composite edge bonding.
ICON® resin infiltrate is specifically formulated for white spot treatment. Removing white spots is different to removing brown spots, because they aren’t caused by the same things. At Face Teeth Smile in Chalfont St Peter, we recommend micro abrasion or composite bonding to tackle areas of brown discolouration.
At our Chalfont St Peter, Gerrards Cross practice, we don’t use teeth whitening to remove white spots. We use it to tackle stains that build up on the teeth over time. It’s not designed for removing white spots. To affect a smile transformation, ICON® and teeth whitening can be combined. If all of your teeth are whitened and brightened first, white spots appear closer in colour to the rest of the teeth and blend seamlessly when treated with ICON®.
At Face Teeth Smile, we don’t need to drill your teeth in preparation for white spot removal with ICON®. Sometimes very deep spots need to be minimally prepared and covered with composite bonding as ICON® alone might not be enough.
